The seaside town of Deal, one of the UK’s best places to live, has been ‘renamed’ Great Deal, turning the affluent seaside town into the home of a great deal.

This transformation, from Lebara Mobile, is throwing a spotlight on how much money Brits are wasting every year by not getting smarter with their money – a staggering £11.8 billion.

Research has shown why Brits continue to overpay for their mobile phone services.

It turns out that over half of people (54%) said that they’re worried about sneaky hidden costs or fees: that’s over 45m Brits. More than a third (37%) are suspicious that a low cost inevitably means low quality, and a fifth of us simply don’t trust good deals.

Sometimes you don’t have to sacrifice quality for a great price. That’s why Lebara Mobile is setting out to show that great deals do exist, and the public can do the smart thing by taking advantage of one when it comes along. From indulgent spa treatments and professional cut-and-blow-dries to gourmet meals and rare records - all have been offered for the exceptional value of £5 throughout the town, as the newly dubbed ‘Great Deal’ in Kent takes centre stage. Through its innovative partnerships with local businesses, including the rebranded Great Deal FC, Lebara Mobile is showcasing that good quality experiences can be had at a great price, much like its SIM-only plans which start from just £5 per month.

Those who aren’t Kent locals can still get in on the action.

Lebara Mobile is offering all-expenses-paid weekend trips to Deal (Great Deal, that is) and a year’s worth of free mobile SIMs, too. Proving “a great deal” doesn’t just stop at your data plan, the takeover has been informed by new research that shows that Brits could be saving almost a billion pounds a month on their mobile phone contracts. With 89 million active mobile contracts in the UK, averaging a monthly bill of £16.08, by switching to Lebara Mobile’s leading £5 5GB monthly data plan, the nation could be saving a remarkable £11.8 billion over the course of a year (or around one and a half times the GDP of Monaco).

However, a quarter of Brits (27%) haven’t changed mobile providers in ten years or more. Had they switched, they could have treated themselves to a few of the finer things in life, the equivalent of:

  • FIVE Michelin star dinners
  • 23 wash, cut and blow drys
  • Over 60 cinema trips for two (including a large popcorn to share)
  • Enough petrol to drive from Land’s End to John o’Groats and back three times
  • Over 2,000 lottery tickets
  • Three return flights from the UK to New York
  • ...or 4,400 Freddos
