Hyundai champions EV spontaneity in glorious journey from Perth to Sydney
Having an electric car needn’t mean an end to motoring’s founding ethos of freedom, according to Hyundai’s latest campaign.
Range anxiety has been a major factor in the public’s reticence to dive into the electric motoring revolution, with many fearing that a lack of predictable charging station options will leave them stranded in their vehicle without power.
Research, however, has found that although range anxiety peaked for people who were 1-2 years out from purchasing their first EV, after that, anxiety decreased through the purchase of an electric car, and generally trended downwards through 5+ years of ownership.
Given that the world’s foremost electric car manufacturer, Tesla, doesn’t advertise, it’s down to its rivals to make the case for electric autonomy, and Hyundai is keen to dispel these initial fears, and reposition its cars as viable candidates for long-distance motoring.
Its latest advert sees drivers use four of its electric and hybrid models to embark on an adventure from Perth to Sydney: which a casual Google search puts at 2,391 miles.
En route, the drivers take part in a few adrenalin-fuelled driving stunts, including wheel spins and excursions into watery terrain. There’s even a scene in which a driver uses their battery to power an indulgent bit of electrified musical performance in a barren landscape.
In keeping with the theme of this week’s advert selection, the focus here is once again escapism and enjoying time in nature to escape the modern world. The Australian Outback is a decidedly rugged and deserted setting for Hyundai’s campaign. And not a Tesla in sight.
