The London pub where the price of your drink depends on your wealth

The London pub where the price of your drink depends on your wealth

Ever wondered what a pint would cost if billionaires paid their fair share?

This dry January, Oxfam is shaking up London's pub scene with the opening of a unique new local, for one day only, that shows punters the stark reality of wealth inequality and calls for a fairer system.

Taking place during the Davos World Economic Forum, ‘The Fair Pour’ will open in London’s Holborn on Tuesday 21st January, to shine a light on the growing issue surrounding wealth inequality. The Fair Pour is the only pub in London where the price of a drink reflects the punter’s wealth.

Forget set pricing, at The Fair Pour, customers will be encouraged to pay what they feel is fair based on their net worth, as this unique establishment challenges the status quo with a pricing system that reflects the stark reality of wealth disparity.

At the Fair Pour, more affluent customers are encouraged to dig deep and pay prices reflecting their wealth, highlighting how a fairer tax system could help tackle inequality.

If billionaires paid a little more in taxes (it’s just a drop in the ocean for them), that money could fund healthcare, education, fair wages, and protection from the climate crisis.

Kelly Mundy, senior campaigns manager, at Oxfam commented: "Wealth inequality is the shocking reality of our society, and a reality that’s worsening every year. It's time for bold solutions like progressive taxation and investment in public services to create a more equal playing field.

“The Fair Pour pub highlights the urgent need for action to create a fairer world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. We hope it encourages people to think about how a fairer tax system could create a more just society for everyone.

More than just a place to grab a drink, the pub is a forum for conversation and change. Oxfam will be on hand to provide information about their work on tax justice and inequality, encouraging discussion about how to build a fairer world for everyone.

With 15.5 million Brits set to have an alcohol-free start to the year₁, The Fair Pour creates an opportunity for meaningful pub chat as it raises awareness of wealth inequality and its connection to tax policies.

Not only will customers be able to enjoy a non-alcoholic tipple, including a selection of delicious non-alcoholic beers, wines, and mocktails including Old Money Fashioned, Highballer, The Billionaire’s Breeze and Caviar Collins, but for quiz connoisseurs across London, a classic pub quiz will also be on the menu.

Punters can test their general knowledge, as well as swot up on some, shocking stats, surrounding wealth inequality, with the winning team getting their hands on a free, alcohol-free round.
